Why is the Dominican Cigar widely renowned?

To know the answer to the Dominican Cigar mystery, you simply drive from the airport in Puerto Plata about 15 minutes into the country side, and then dig your hands deep down into the rich, dark soil that graces the Cibao Valley. This area encompasses most of the northern Dominican Republic . It extends about 145 miles (235 km), from Manzanillo Bay in the west to Samaná Bay in the east. The mountain ranges of the Cordillera Septentrional and the rugged Cordillera Central bound the Cibao Valley on north and south, respectively.

The Cibao Valley is the country's most densely settled region, and is home to some of the finest tobacco and coffee growing in the world. Driving through this area you will see mile after mile of sugarcane and tobacco. It doesn’t take long to realize that you are at the heart of Caribbean agriculture.

The quality and variety of Cigar tobacco from the Dominican Republic has improved enormously in the past 20 years. The primary growing region is near the city of Santiago in the northern half of the country. Located in an agricultural region, this small city is also home to the majority of Dominican Cigar makers. Most Dominican tobacco is derived from Cuban seed varieties. Although not as strong, it is quite full flavored and lends itself to the creation of unusually complex blends.

More recently, you will hear arguments among aficionados over Dominican cigars versus Cuban cigars. Some feel that due to over farming Cuba has lost it’s edge over the rest of the world. Many Cuban cigar companies now have operations based in the Dominican Republic. A perfect example is Davidoff, one of the top brands in the world. In 1990 they completely moved out of Cuba and straight to the Cibao Valley of the Dominican Republic. Other cigar manufacturers have followed suit and have at least partial operations in the Dominican:

Montecristo

Partagas

Romeo y Julieta

H. Upmann

Macanudo

Don Diego

Cohiba

But hey, you don’t have to take our word for it. Just come down here to the DR and look around yourself. It’s no coincidence that you’ll find a great cigar, world class cup of coffee, and the finest rum all in the same area. They were meant to be enjoyed together, and no where else will you find them in exceedingly good form as the Cibao Valley.
