The Padron family is not a newby to the cigar world. Everyone has heard about what type of great cigars they make. Their critically acclaimed 1926 series won the “Cigar of the Year” award from Cigar aficionado which speaks volumes of the company. Pardon cigar are also noted for their exceptional quality which is why it is sometimes hard to find them at cigar retailers.
The Padron family decided that quality can not be rushed and they simply refuse to send out cigars that haven’t been aged properly. To me, that speaks even more than the award they won. They care about their product and they care about their 100 year tradition of quality.
The Padron Delicias 46 x 4 7/8 Maduro Puro is the cigar on tap today for review. Once again I choose this cigar for many reasons. The price on this cigar is quite affordable at $3.60 a stick. The quality of the brand is renowned so you know what to expect. The cigar just looks great to begin with, so that makes the decision that much more simple and the fact that this is a short smoke, which is what I am gravitating to these days, made smoking this cigar a very easy decision for me.
As I lit my cigar, I noticed a sweet spiciness upon lighting that surprised me. When a cigar is aged for this amount of time, you wouldn’t expect that. The taste sensation didn’t last long and the spiciness went away. At first, it was hard to get the cigar to burn straight but, after a little while, the cigar settled down and I didn’t experience any problem with the burn. In fact, the cigar burned nice and slow after the initial spiciness. The cigar didn’t get harsh at all. I would think that they only reason that this cigar would ever burn harsh would be if you were smoking it to fast. This is quite a mellow cigar. I wouldn’t expect that from Nicaraguan tobacco which is noted for being a bit more on the strong side.
The construction of the cigar was superb. From the moment you gaze at the lovely brown Maduro wrapper you feel like this is going to be a good smoke. The cigar was firm to the touch, but it had just enough softness to it to allow a good draw. The cigar was packed with just the right amount of aged premium tobacco. Over the course of smoking the cigar it held its ash wonderfully well.
The cigar had an easy draw to it and a lot of smoke. The cigar had a sweetness to it that I couldn’t identify. It was almost as if the tip of the cigar was sweetened, but looking at the Padron website, they never spoke about sweetening their cigars, so I gather it was the natural sweetness of the quality aged Maduro wrapper.
This cigar is light on the palette and light on the wallet. This is a perfect cigar to enjoy after you eat your lunch. It is mild enough that you will still be able to go back to work, yet it will leave you feeling quite satisfied that you got your monies worth out of your smoke and that you smoked a great cigar in the process.
