Mr. Byrd takes out a 'loan' to buy a La Gloria Cubana Serie R # 6 and finds out he has good el Credito. Find out why Jonathan thinks this cigar is well worth the price.
La Gloria Cubana Serie R # 6 5 7/8 x 60 Wrapper: Ecuadoran Filler: Dominican and Nicaraguan Binder: Nicaraguan Made in the Dominican Republic from the Famous EL Credito Factory
I thought a bit of history about this cigar would be helpful before I throw in my personal feelings about this cigar. In 1999, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr, the man behind La Gloria Cubana, decided that he wanted to give his customers a new smoke that would appeal to the ever growing population of cigar smokers that prefer a more robust full bodied cigar. The Serie R was born from that decision. There are four sizes in this line of cigars and they have all scored well with reviewers.
The cigar I choose to review today is the # 6 which is next to the largest one that they make. I choose this one because it is a bit shorter than the # 7 and I didn’t want to smoke this thing for two hours…The last time I smoked a #7 I had to put it down after an hour and forty-five minutes. I couldn’t handle it any more. It was like eating ten plates at a buffet…good food, just couldn’t stomach it anymore…
The series R line really provides a robust flavorful cigar that will delight even the hedonist. Now, without any further adieu, let us jump into this pillar of smoke and fire and see what type of cigar Ernesto really created.
When you go to your local tobacconist to pick up this cigar you will notice the beautiful mahogany box with gold inlay in which the cigars are packaged in. The box speaks volumes about the cigar. The creator of this cigar wants you to know that this isn’t just any cigar, this is a serie R. You look at the different sizes and wonder just how big are they going to keep on making them. A 60 ring gauge is a “freakin” large smoke that only a professional should handle. You can take it to the bank that the larger the ring gauge, the fuller the flavor is going to be and this cigar definitely delivers on that.
Like I said, I picked the # 6 because it had a large ring gauge and it wasn’t as long as the #7 so I knew I didn’t have to smoke this thing for two hours. Now, a cigar this big sometimes takes a while to light up if you are using matches as I did, so I would recommend using a torch lighter. It will save you much trouble on this one. Upon lighting I noticed tons of thick, grey smoke billowing out like someone took a match to a local oil refinery. You will definitely enjoy the smoke factor of this cigar so make sure you are in a well ventilated area.
The cigar has a bold luxurious taste to it. You can taste the ligero which subtlety attacks your palette which each puff. The cigar started out very, very strong, but settled down after a few minutes and became a mild mannered lady. It is quite amazing to smoke a full bodied cigar that treats your palette gently. I never noticed any harshness after the first initial few puffs. It is a unique aspect to a quality cigar that has been aged well that even a bold smoke, such as the serie R, can be gentle as a lamb to your senses.
The burn on my cigar was something less than desirable, but I have smoked enough of these cigars to know that was an anomaly rather than the norm. Even so, keep your torch handy just incase you need to “insure” a proper burn. You will want to save this for an after dinner cigar. A bold cigar and an empty stomach is not a good match. Believe me, I have personal experience here, but that is for another article and another day.
In short, buy this cigar. At $6.55 a piece, it is more than my usual smoke, but the overall satisfaction you will get is unmatched. Write me and tell me what you think about this cigar. I would love to hear from you. And as always, if you have a cigar that you would like for me to review, just write to
