“I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Jonathan Byrd reviews the Casa Blanca De Luxe cigar. He says, "This cigar will have you saying 'play it again, Sam!'".
Editors Note: The Godfather is back and we're glad he's off the bench after an Olympian-style comeback from a family-wide virus. After only a few days off he's back in the cigar lab testing sticks furiously for our loyal readers.
Casa Blanca Cigar Company Connecticut Wrapper, Mexican binder, Dominican long filler Casa Blanca De luxe 6x50
I picked this cigar up from my local tobacco store the today with great hopes for a good smoke. I had a brief break from cigars this past week and I was itching to get back to my lovely habit. My family had been sick, so my cigar time had been diminished. With all of the extra duties to help the family, cigar review had been pushed to the back burner. Today, I am back in the driver seat and ready to review another cigar and I have a relatively nice one for all of your Dominican fans out there.
The Casa Blanca De Luxe 6x50 is a medium priced and quite mild of a smoke. I bought this cigar for $3.25 which is not a bad deal. For a long filler Dominican cigar with a nice looking Connecticut wrapper this is a good smoke. You didn’t spend so much money that you expected it to be a Montecristo, but you paid enough for it to behave itself and taste good. I wasn’t disappointed with this one. After lighting it up, I noticed a sweet smelling aroma and low and behold, it was the smoke. I don’t remember smelling any “cigar” smoke that smelled sweet, so here is a first for me.
The cigar had really nice white ash which held on quite nicely. The burn was somewhat crooked, but that could be do to the fact I was driving around the city when I was smoking it. After a while, I put it down and let it set itself aright and burn properly. I knocked off the excess ash and relit it and it smoked perfectly after that. This cigar seemed to be aged perfectly. I didn’t notice any ammonia all through out the cigar. I did notice a funny taste during the first 1/5 of the cigar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on the actual taste. The taste wasn’t horrible but there was something that wasn’t “normal” there.
One of the few problems that I did experience was that the cigar was packed with way too much with tobacco so that it was much harder to draw on than it should have been for a ring gauge of this size. I have had other Casa Blanca cigars before and I don’t remember ever having a problem with the draw, so I would say this was more of the problem with the particular cigar rather than a problem with the line or the company.
The cigar really didn’t leave any lingering taste in the mouth and considering this was a mild cigar I would expect that. Overall, I would rate this as an average Dominican product. It gave good value for the money I paid and would give a good hour of smoking pleasure if you took your time.
As always, if you want me to review a specific cigar all you have to do is ask. E-mail me at
and put in the subject line, “cigar review request” and I will try to oblige.
