Mr. Jonathan Byrd brings back the good old days with his review of the CAO Gold Double Corona.
Do you remember your first love? After you grow older and are cleaning out an old drawer at your parent’s house and you see this picture of this goofy girl that was your first love. The nostalgia, the feelings that you once had swell up inside of you for the briefest of moments, well, this cigar is like that picture. Oh the memories…..
For my loyal fans, I must apologies for not reviewing in the last month. I had to move into a new house and started a new business, so I didn’t do much smoking. But today, I will remedy that. I will review one of my first cigars that I smoked in great quantities. It is the CAO Gold Double Corona 7.5 x 54.
This cigar came on the scene in 1996 during the height of the cigar boom. Unlike many of its contemporaries, this cigar had staying power. In fact the CAO Corona was rated 90 in Cigar Aficionado which makes it the second highest non-Cuban that they have rated. The wrapper is a shade-grown Ecuadorian, Connecticut Seed Wrapper with an aged Nicaraguan long filler and binder. This has to be one of my all time favorite cigars. I sit here writing this without even lighting it up yet. I want to enjoy the creamy flavor that you get from just resting it in your mouth. Believe me you are going to enjoy this one.
I have had this one in my humidor for about a month now. It is just ripe for the picking The cap was cut off perfectly without leaving any clippings behind. A well seasoned cigar that is ready to be lit. Okay, the deed is done. The cigar is lit. Like your first kiss, it is all coming back to me now. The creamy vanilla taste, the hint of nutmeg on the palette; yes, this is bliss for the senses. Does life get much better than this?
The construction on this cigar is superb. The rich brown wrapper hasn’t a tear nor vein that protrudes. The white ash holds on and on and on and on…This is a masterpiece. The cigar burns as well as you would expect. The brown burn gently outlines the cigars ash. You will want to smoke this cigar all the way down to the nub. No trace of harshness you will find. It is a pleasure to behold and to taste. Give this lady a try and you will be hooked. At $5 a stick, it is a medium priced cigar, but it delivers the goods…boy does it ever.
