Cigar smoking is creating a popular trend nowadays. Over the years, cigars have been a symbol of manhood, power and high status. The origin of the first cigar is highly debatable but it is generally accepted that the Europeans brought worldwide popularity to cigar smoking. During Columbus’ voyage in 1492, two sailors saw Cuban Indians smoking a primeval form of a cigar. From that point on, sailors and conquistadors alike were drawn to the habit of smoking cigars. Thus begins the story of Cohiba's.

Cohiba originates from the Taino Indian word for tobacco. Cohiba Cigar has a deep political history. At first, Cohibas were exclusively made for Fidel Castro and other dignitaries. Castro is one of the most influential people of the Cuban government. He commonly gives these cigars to other high-ranking officials and communists as diplomatic gifts. Since then, smoking Cohiba cigars has become a status symbol. There were first released on a commercial basis in the year 1982. But in contrast to popular belief, Fidel Castro was not the first person to smoke Cohibas. He had always noticed an aromatic and nice cigar smoke from his bodyguard, Chicho Perez. When asked which cigar brand he smoked, he told Castro that his friend, Eduardo Rivera, specially rolled the cigars for him. Castro then commissioned Rivera to do special cigars for him, along with five other cigar rollers. A small factory was then created in an old political manor to produce Cohibas .

Among the brands of Cuban cigars, Cohiba Cigars are the most prestigious. Cohibas are further classified into two different kinds. Cuba produces one type of cigar for Habanos SA, while a different cigar is produced by the Dominican Republic for General Cigar. Cohibas are only made from premium tobacco. Most of these tobaccos originate from Pinar Del Rio Province, one of the finest tobacco fields in the country. During the manufacturing phase, Cohibas undergo a very meticulous process. The tobacco used for Cohibas goes through three fermentation processes in barrels.  This is a unique process used by Cuban brands. It was originally developed at El Laguito, but because of the high demand of its supply, it was eventually expanded to other areas in the country. A Cohiba cigar has a smooth flavor that is very distinct that no other cigars can come close to its taste.

Cohiba Cigars

Since its commercialization in 1982, Cohibas have become the flagship of tobacco companies in Cuba. During the same year, three variants of Cohibas were introduced: Corona Especiale, Panetela and Lancero. By 1989, another three variants were added, which included Exquisito, Esplendido and Robusto. In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Caribbean by Columbus, Cohiba Cigar’s Siglo series was launched, which included Siglo I, Siglo II, Siglo III, Siglo VI and Siglo V. The latest Cohiba variant to hit the market is Cohiba’s Piramade.

Cohiba Cigars vary in length and diameter. The shortest, Siglo I, is only 102 mm. The Espléndido is the lengthiest at an impressive 178 mm. The diameter can vary from 15.08 mm (Lancero) to 21.43 (Sublime).

Distinct Quality of Cohiba Cigars

Cohiba Cigars are normally packaged in an elegant wooden box and are individually wrapped in cardboard. The moment you open the box, the distinct aroma will entice you to light one right away. Cohibas are smaller than the majority, a feature which makes them the perfect treat to enjoy during a short break.

Every variant of Cohiba comes with its own unique taste. However, the gentle woody spiciness is dominant in all of the Cohiba variants. The flavor of salty spiciness welcomes you the instant you touch your lips to a Cohiba. The distinct taste of Cuban cedar is always present. Cohibas give off a round and rich smoke. Some variants may include a hint of honey flavor, seasoned fruits or even nuts in between puffs.
